About Alisa

Alisa began her yoga journey in 2015 when a friend convinced her to try a hot vinyasa yoga class. She was initially hesitant and even considered cancelling just minutes before the class started. However, just five minutes into the class she was completely hooked. Alisa got an unlimited membership at the studio and began attending two classes per day. Three months later, she enrolled in a 200-hour RYT program at Flow Yoga Studio in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ. Upon completing her teacher training, Alisa immediately started teaching, beginning with community classes and teaching women at a homeless shelter. She continued teaching at gyms and yoga studios in New Jersey before moving to Wilmington with her two boys in 2018.

Since relocating to Wilmington, she has continued to teach throughout the community, volunteering her time to teach at a homeless shelter, providing yoga classes to students in recovery, and leading yoga classes for victims of sex trafficking. Alisa aspires to gradually make the world a better place, one yoga class at a time. She shares her life experiences with her students in the hope of creating a better world for everyone.

Unlocking Calm:  A Journey through Somatic Experiencing and Polyvagal Theory

Saturday, February 22, 10am-1pm

In a world that is stressed and moving fast, finding a sense of calm is harder than ever before.  New research and science about the nervous system can help us "know more and do better".  This class will provide some education on polyvagal theory, how stress and trauma impacts our nervous system, and how somatic experiencing supports the processing of stress in our bodies to heal and find CALM.  Somatic experiencing (SE) is a body-centered therapy that helps people process traumatic experiences and heal trauma.  SE is a modality that can be used by psychotherapists, physical therapists, massage therapists, yoga teachers, and others within their own scope of practice.  The basic principles of SE as well as the skills taught in this class can be used immediately by anyone wanting to enhance their own sense of calm and flow more fluidly through the natural cycles of our nervous system.  This class will include 90 minutes of lecture with the remaining time being experiential practice.

About Jessica

Jessica came to yoga over 20 years ago as an alternative way to “work out”.  Immediately she felt the the mind-body connection, but it took her many years of exploring and practicing to understand yoga was more of a “working in” for her.  Jessica expanded her practice and by taking a 200 hour teaching training with Dolly Stavros of then Red Stone Yoga out of Charlotte NC.  Jessica’s training and style is in vinyasa yoga, linking breath to movement, and exploring the uniqueness of each practice day to day.  Jessica has had further training in special populations including kids yoga, prenatal yoga, trauma-informed yoga, and yoga for athletes.  Jessica teaches from an psycho educational philosophy of “when we know better, we do better” which makes her classes informative and experiential.

Jessica has taught in various settings including private yoga in homes, gyms, yoga studios, retreat centers, and she owned a yoga studio for several years.  Jessica leads workshops, yoga teacher trainings, and speaks to businesses/corporations on utilization of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness as a way to cope with chronic stress and burnout.  She currently is the practice owner of Stillpoint Counseling and Wellness a mental health practice that has a holistic  perspective to healthcare.

Jessica’s yoga teaching is heavily influenced by her career as a licensed clinical social worker.  She looks at the whole person, their environment, their support system, and works with all of the people within those systems to help people recognize their full potential.  Jessica believes people are resilient and they can transform after challenges and that mindfulness practices help the transformation process.

Take flight! In this interactive workshop Lauren breaks down tips, tricks, and drills to get you feeling strong, light, and playful on your hands and forearms ~ Wanna get curious about what you’re capable of? Thorough, easy to understand instruction will have you taking postures that were once a dream and making them reality. All levels options, variations + progressions Pre-reqs: None!

About Lauren

Lauren Alivia found yoga at a young age, during a tumultuous time in her life. Searching for healing, she found a home in the practice of Vinyasa in downtown Raleigh and the obsession was born. She graduated from One Heart Yoga just a year and a half after her first class in a studio and has since dedicated her days to learning and sharing the practice with depth and passion ~ studying Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, Ashtanga & Rocket Yoga, Thai, hand balancing, partner acrobatics, meditation and breath work practices. As a teacher, Lauren has gained over 10 years experience in a variety of studios and gyms across North Carolina, Montana, Georgia and Puerto Rico - instructing students of all ages, goals, and experience levels. Lauren geeks out on anatomically sound movement patterns, alignment, mobility for functionality, and all of the many things the body is capable of. Her teaching methodology is rooted in helping students shed fear and attachments - to realizing that our greatest limitations are the ones we create in our own minds.

When not teaching she can usually be found hanging out upside down, surfing or skating around the island.

Lauren represents Yoga Salt (Wilmington), Ashes to Bones Hot Yoga (Topsail) and Alchemy Hot Yoga (Raleigh)

Melissa Russell, C-IAYT, ERYT-500

iRest Yoga Nidra for Healing

Saturday, February 22, 10-11am

iRest follows the tradition of yoga nidra. This means the practice takes you on a journey through what yogic philosophy calls the koshas (the feeling, breath, mind, wisdom, and joy bodies) to facilitate deep rest and healing. It is practiced for specific benefits: to induce

profound relaxation; eliminate stress; overcome insomnia; solve personal and interpersonal problems; resolve trauma; and neutralize and overcome anxiety, fear, anger, and depression. It can also be used by anyone to find a sense of peace and ease in everyday life as well as help uncover our life’s purpose and live with intention. If you are thinking, “Can it really do all that?” The answer is, “Yes. All that!”

In an iRest practice you enter a deep state of relaxation all while remaining aware and alert which uncovers your innate intelligence and intrinsic clarity. It’s all right there waiting for you. This amazing practice offers so much and it simply involves lying down, getting

cozy, and listening to the prompts.

About Melissa

Melissa has practiced yoga almost everyday for the past 20 years using using movement, breathing, and meditation practices to build resiliency. Knowing the practices helped her, she began to teach yoga to her colleagues at work (at one point in a glass walled board room). She left her corporate job four years ago and is now a certified yoga therapist.

As yoga therapist, Melissa works primarily one-on-one with people in her Chapel Hill Studio. She uses movement, breath, meditation, and philosophy to help people find better health and well-being physically, mentally, emotionally, energetically and spiritually. She also teaches group classes at Yoga Garden Pittsboro, Dogwood Studio, Carolina House, Jubilee Clinic, as well as Veteran’s First.

She is a certified yoga therapist; a 500 hour registered yoga teacher trained in ashtanga, anusara, and pelvic floor health; and an iRest certified meditation teacher.

Yin Yoga

Saturday, February 22, 10-11am

Slow-paced style of yoga, incorporating principles of traditional Chinese medicine, with asanas (postures) that are held for longer periods of time.

About Katie

I am a yoga teacher here in the coastal area of WIlmington and Topsail. Currently I am registered with YA as a 200hr certified yoga teacher. I have completed my 300hr training as well and am working towards registering as a 500hr certified teacher with YA. Yoga has been a part of my life since the age 16 and becoming a teacher was an opportunity to explore my own practice in a new way as well as share something that has been meaningful to me with others in our community.

Through yoga teaching I found a deep passion for guiding students towards physical and mental balance.Although I teach a variety of yoga styles, my practice has always been rooted in Yin Yoga, which offers a unique opportunity to cultivate mindfulness—something I believe is essential in today’s fast-paced world. I guide my students to slow down, tune into their breath, and explore the deeper layers of their bodies and minds. Whether in a slow, restorative class or a more dynamic flow, my aim is to create a space where students of all levels can relax, reconnect, and experience renewal. Yoga, for me, is not just about physical postures, but about fostering a sense of presence and self-awareness that extends far beyond the mat. With each class, I focus on offering a space for relaxation and self-discovery, helping students of all levels find both strength and serenity on and off the mat.

A Little Funk with your Flow

Saturday, February 22, 10-11am

A fun, intermediate level vinyasa flow with some funk/soul music for a little added inspiration.

About Walter

After being sidelined with a torn Achilles’ tendon in the spring of 2011, a friend recommended to Walter Thomas that he take yoga to help with his recovery. It didn’t take long for Walter to develop a passion that continues to burn to this day. After growing up playing competitive sports like basketball, football, track & field, and boxing, he’s always up for challenges. Yoga, in a few ways, provided a different challenge though for Walter which kept him coming back for more. In fall of 2013, Walter completed his 200 RYT training at Yoga Six located in San Diego, where he has been teaching since. Soon after he completed his training, he took to teaching a Yoga Six, Vinyasa Arts, and Inhale Yoga & Fitness all located in San Diego. Walter also had the honor of being a former lululemon ambassador which was also a great platform used to give back and share everything that yoga has done for him.

Individualized Anatomy and Posture Assessment

Saturday, February 22, 2pm-3:30pm

While human anatomy has the same basic features, this class will focus on a review of basic anatomical landmarks, range of motion, as well as examine fine details which contribute to our unique differences. These differences may stem from past injuries and activities we have done, or from genetic influences. Regardless of the reason for the differences improving one’s understanding of these details can carry over into a more effective and even safer yoga practice. We will use a body “map” to chart our posture and discuss ways to implement yoga to work more effectively with our bodies.

Traditional Tantra Yoga

Saturday, February 22, 2pm-3:30pm

Gentle. aligning. meditative yoga. great for all levels. depending on the class, we begin with settling into our bodies through gentle warm-up or resting in savasana. each series is specifically designed to calibrate our bodies and align our bones. the tri dosha series is the primary sequence taking place entirely on the ground at a slow pace, encouraging meditation and deep relaxation, similar to yin or restorative yoga. some of the other tantra yoga flows include viyama: standing series, dand flow: strengthening series, surya namaskar: sun salutation, and the hip-opening forward bending series. the main focus is preparing your whole self in a way that allows you to feel into your body, settle your system, and fully relax. all asanas are held to lengthen + deepen, each one building upon the last, for an overall euphoric and relaxing body sensation. final savasana concludes each practice, offering the space to reset and honor our sacred selves.

About David

David Morrison began his yogic journey in 2007. Given his mobility and self-care needs, David was introduced to adaptive yoga as an avenue for navigating college life. He credits an initial understanding of breath-work to bringing vitality back into his life and sparking a passion for yoga.

His journey took a backseat to academics, until 2014 when he decided to enter grad school to pursue a career in public service. David quickly realized, in order to balance the demands of his chosen field, he had to return to the "mat". Thankfully, he found a community of yogis that has embraced his diversity, promoted equity and fostered inclusion (DEI) to this day...Longwave Yoga (LWY).

In 2019, David had the distinct honor to contribute to a DEI workshop at LWY titled, "Yoga for EveryBODY". It was that day, in retrospect that his teaching path began. However cliche, "the seed was planted". David has owned and operated a nonprofit consulting firm, D.F. Morrison Consulting since 2017.

David is an RYT-200 thanks to an intensive (fully online) training offered by My Vinyasa Practice.’20 His primary focus is restorative yoga but he welcomes those from all levels and all abilities to participate in class.

Presently, David is enrolled in the pre-requisite 20 hour Trauma Informed course hosted by the Center for Trauma and Embodiment at JRI.

Heart of Wonder: Connect to Your Innate Wisdom on the Path to Freedom

 Sunday, February 23, 11:30am-12:30pm

The path to freedom requires the integration of compassionate mind, body, and heart practices that support Bodhichitta: wisdom (bodhi) to our current mind state (chitta). This Dharma session skillfully integrates the practical synthesis of mindfulness teachings, the science of emotions, and the application of interoception within a meditation and yoga practice that trains up our natural sense of AWE in the present moment, no matter the circumstances. Training up this sense is a powerful tool to support emotional, physical, and intellectual maturity, but it takes cultivation.

Learn and practice with Sam to benefit your wellbeing and your impact on the wellbeing of others. Cultivate "wonderment" and practice "wondering" to support the toolkit of Bodhisattva (purity, enlightenment).

About Sam

Sam Sather is a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) and an Insight Yoga Institute (IYI) endorsed teacher. She is a fascia enthusiast related to movement therapy for improvements in posture, chronic pain, and prevention of injury. SAM has Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing and later obtained her Master’s of Science in Education. Out of college she co-owned a local gym where SAM provided personal training to a variety of populations including seniors, athletes, to individuals living with disabilities. In 2017, Sam opened her home studio, Dogwood Yoga Studio to serve individuals and small groups in Yoga Therapy. SAM and her partner Chuck live in Chapel Hill, NC, USA. Mid-Day VIBES Vinyasa

Sunday, February 23, 11:30am-12:30pm

An all levels Vinyasa flow to inspire, balance, energize and stretch. This class helps to cultivate that extra boost of positive mood and mindset to carry through the rest of your day.

About Tenille

I Believe Meredith Brooks said it right back in the late 90s when she sang, “I’m a little bit of everything all rolled into one.” Well, that’s me! I’m a yogi, a lover, a fighter, a child, a mother, a wife, and so much more. I’m incredibly lucky to be married to Tim, my partner for over 10 years. Together, we have a beautifully blended family of seven kids and two grandkids, plus our loyal Belgian Malinois, Rambo or ‘Bo’ for short.

By day, I’m a legal assistant and in my free time I am a yoga teacher. I’ve dabbled in yoga since my late 20s, but it wasn’t until we moved to Sneads Ferry, NC, in August 2022 that I truly embraced what yoga really is and means. Finding my tribe here was a blessing, and I’ve been guided by intuition and faith ever since. Starting my yoga certification course was transformative, helping me integrate yoga’s teachings into my daily life. Amidst the chaos of our busy family life, yoga has brought me peace and clarity. Friends and family have noticed the positive changes in me, often asking what’s different. The answer is simple: yoga.

Yoga has become my passion, and I’m dedicated to sharing it with as many people as possible. My goal is to help others find the same peace and balance I’ve discovered. Even if I only reach a few people, I hope they’ll carry that positivity forward, creating a ripple effect of goodness in the world. After all, we can always use more light, love, and positive vibes, right!

Sunday, February 23, 1pm-2:30pm

Discover how to create yoga classes that resonate with and support neurodivergent individuals. In this 90-minute workshop, we'll explore the unique needs and strengths of neurodivergent students, including those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other neurodiverse conditions. You'll learn practical tools and strategies to design classes that are accessible, inclusive, and empowering.

We'll begin by discussing the key principles of neurodivergent-friendly yoga, including sensory considerations, communication styles, and creating a supportive environment. Then, we'll move into a guided practice that integrates these elements, offering you firsthand experience of how these techniques can be applied in a real class setting.

By the end of this workshop, you'll have the knowledge and confidence to design and lead yoga sessions that honor neurodiversity, making your classes a welcoming space for all.

About Donna

Growing up as a dancer Donna fell in love with the flow and grace of Vinyasa and Ashtanga when she first discovered yoga.  The constant challenge of physical, mental and spiritual balance has kept her coming back ever since.  She loves that there is a yoga practice out there for anyone who is willing to try.  She started teaching yoga so she could help students discover the beauty of the breath, the ease of movement and the acceptance of self and others that yoga offers.  Always emphasizing the practice of honoring the body’s current state of being through ahimsa (non-violence), students are guided by Donna to explore all the possibilities yoga has to improve the health and well-being of mind, body and spirit.  Her classes are fun, energetic and aimed at helping you find balance in your practice on and off the mat.

When you come to a class with Donna, you will be met right where you are, and move through a mindfully-flowing yoga sequence that is creative, fun, and challenging without being overwhelming. You'll learn anatomy and alignment cues to make all your yoga poses more effective and amazing, no matter what style you usually practice. Her classes often involve energetic sequences but also incorporate stillness in order to quiet the mind.  Her welcoming teaching style, energy, love, & passion for yoga will keep you coming back for more!  Get ready to feel empowered, fit, and energized to move your lessons off the mat and transform your body, mind and life from the inside out!
